Joint SATREPS–EANET Training Strengthens Air Quality Monitoring in Cambodia

Phnom Penh, Cambodia, June 8–12, 2026

A joint technical mission combining training and a regional workshop was successfully conducted in Cambodia from 8 to 12 June 2026 under the joint implementation of the SATREPS research project “Establishment of a Risk Management Platform for Air Pollution in Cambodia” (Air SATREPS) and the Acid Deposition Monitoring Network in East Asia (EANET). The mission aimed to strengthen technical capacity in air quality monitoring and to enhance the use of scientific evidence in policymaking across East Asia.

The activities were jointly organized by Air‑SATREPS and ACAP, with participation from Institue of Technology of Cambodia (ITC), the Ministry of Environment of Cambodia (MOE), and Kanazawa University.

The mission aimed to enhance practical skills in monitoring, analysis, and quality assurance, while strengthening institutional collaboration.

Throughout the week, participants engaged in lectures, hands on training, and technical discussions. At ITC, sessions focused on wet and dry deposition monitoring, filter pack sampling, and ion chromatography (IC) analysis. Practical exercises and discussions helped improve laboratory procedures, data quality, and analytical consistency.

A major component of the mission was ozone monitoring. At MOE and ITC, participants conducted calibration of ozone monitors and initiated parallel monitoring to ensure data reliability. These activities enhanced technical capacity and emphasized the importance of routine maintenance and quality assurance for long term monitoring.

On 12 June, the program culminated in a Joint Workshop on Air Pollution Policy Based on PM2.5 Source Information, co organized under EANET Project (2026 06) and Air SATREPS. The workshop gathered regional experts to exchange knowledge on PM2.5 source apportionment and its application to policy. Discussions highlighted key challenges, including limited technical capacity and the complexity of transboundary pollution, and emphasized the need for cost effective and science based approaches.

Panelist discussion

The training and workshop together provided important insights into air quality management. Major PM2.5 sources were identified as transport emissions, biomass burning, secondary aerosols, and transboundary pollution. Participants highlighted the importance of strengthening chemical analysis, integrating monitoring with modeling and satellite data, and ensuring continuous long term observations.

The mission concluded with agreement on future collaboration, including continued technical support, data sharing, and joint monitoring activities between ITC and MOE. This joint Air SATREPS and EANET initiative represents an important step toward sustainable air quality management in Cambodia and supports evidence based environmental policy in the region.
